LIL'WAT
The Lil’Wat peoples of Canada have always been and continue to be a people of the land. According to the nation, they have never granted the rights for the Canadian government to make use of their land freely, although settlers and colonial governments have done otherwise.
Customary land holding structures within the Lil’Wat nation modelled a communal type of system which have now changed to three systems: Private Property, Public Property and State Property (Nemoto, 2002). Today in attempt to keep their traditions alive, and protect the land they have left the Lil’Wat nation are known as a group of activists defending against the abuse of [their] right to fish, the right to protect [their] sacred places by destructive clear-cut logging and lastly standing in solidarity with other Indigenous peoples (lilwat.ca)
