SQUAMISH NATION

The Squamish peoples of Canada have been people of the land, and have inhabited their traditional lands for centuries. Their society has always been governed and organized by rules and laws that encompass all aspects of social relations, economic relations and relations with other first nations.

They are descendants of Coast Salish peoples who inhabited the Lower Mainland region, Squamish watershed and Gibson’s landing (indigenousreporting.com). Their culture and tradition is passed down through oral tradition which still continues to be a fundamental aspect of their culture. Today the Squamish people live in and outside of their territory.

Traditional territory amounted to about 6,732 sq. Km (673, 540 hectares). The nation now consists of 23 villages with a current traditional land of 0.4230% allotted to them (tourismsquamish.com).
